English help file for VideoText
*******************************
By Adriano De Minicis - 2 Nov 96
Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
This file contains some basic hints on how to use VideoText. Since I don't
speak german, it was a lot of work to me to translate the program, so don't
expect I've translated the entire doc!
If you like VideoText, please send to Wilhelm (the author) a postcard or a
gift (remember that VideoText is giftware), to support future developements
of this wonderful program. The address of Wilhelm is:
Wilhelm Nöker
Hertastr. 8
D-44388 Dortmund
Germany
Hints on some basic program operation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(right Amiga)-0 calls page 100, once it's there, click on the page number
cross-references that are listed on it and watch what happens.
(Note: The keyboard shortcut for this function may have changed by the
time you read this. Starting with V5.23, it will probably be f1.)
Or hit f6 to start a "page scan". Let it run for a minute or so and stop it
by pressing Space (or anything else).
Hit the "Help" key to get some help.
A mouse click or double click on almost all objects (texts and especially
page numbers, see details below) does something.
Some menu has more than one keyboard shortcut, having a slighty different
action: for example, F6 (shift f6) starts an advanced page scan, that
collects binary pages also.
The most important feature in everyday use is f10, "Get preset pages",
which refers to the contents of the "presets/" directory. If you can, try
it on some ASTRA station like TNT or Sky News, because VideoText already
knows them.
To add a new station to the ".stations" list, hit (right Amiga)-"+", then
Shift-F9. This should bring up the Editor. Create a new line and use (right
Amiga)-V to insert the contents of the Clipboard. It should look like this:
235 SKY NEWS Fri 23 Mar
and you should edit it to something like this:
SKY NEWS=SkyNews
i.e. <Keyword>=<DOSname>. Quit the editor, and now you can create a list
of frequently used page numbers for this new station. This is done by f9,
"Edit presets list". Blank lines in such a list may be used to seperate
1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th group of page numbers.
Page search
~~~~~~~~~~~
Enter the three-digits page number and hit the Return key. You can use
backspace for corrections. Or you can click on a page number displayed in
the videotext page.
Examples:
100 Page 100 with all subpages
100/2 Subpage number 2 of page 100
100/* Only one subpage (any) of page 100
100-7 Next seven subpages of page 100 (use this only if your station
is supplying bad subpage numbers, which rarely occurs)
100/. As "100", but with continuous update of the page (does not stop
when all subpages are found)
150/! File protocol for page 150. Saves the page whenever it has changed
(but only if the stations supply the proper status flag)
At the right of "Pages:" list there is the number of pages in memory. A
double click on this number deletes all pages from memory. A double click
on a page numer in the "Pages:" list deletes that page.
You can browse through pages with a single click on the page number or with
cursor keys (try also the combinations with Shift, Alt, and Ctrl). To
advance (go back) one page, you may also click in the lower (upper) third
of the displayed page. Note that clicking on a number, no matter in what
region of the page, will do something different: It will move directly to
the corresponding page (of course, only if it's already present in the
list), *and* remember the current page number, so you can return there by
hitting "Esc" or clicking in the middle region of the page.
Printing with the parallel interface
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While VideoText is running, the parallel port hardware is allocated to the
i2c.library, so PRT: can't access it, and the "Print text" function returns
an error. You might force the library to release the hardware, using the
"lock" feature on i2cscan, but it is preferable to save ASCII pages and
print them later.
